The Career Switch

After two years of working in the private sector for a Fortune 500 company, I made the big decision to switch careers. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher, I just never knew when or how I would be able to make it happen. So here I am now, in my first class in a new program with a whole new outlook on life. I must admit, I feel intimidated, overwhelmed, eager, and extremely excited all at the same time.

I'm curious to know how you are feeling about the program so far. Any others out there career switchers? How are you dealing with the change? Any words of wisdom for a new-comer to education like me?

During my special education internship my mentor teacher actually was someone who switched from a 9-5 office job of 15 years to education. She said that it was the best decisions she has ever made, because for once she was really passionate about her work and felt that she was making a positive impact each day. It is great that you have made the switch from "the dark side" (as she would refer to her old job) to education; you're going to do wonderful!

  3. Andra,
As you know, this is a transition for me as well. It is amazing how inspiring it is to talk to other people who are in the same situation. Like you, I have a combination of feelings about it and am certainly somewhat intimidated by what is ahead. It has been a truly enlightening experience to this point and I look forward to what is to come. I have concluded after the last few years of experiencing a "desk job" that it really does make all the difference in the world to enjoy what you do for a living and I look forward to travelling down this road together with all of our fellow future teachers!
